Nihao! Hello my name is Mary Jo Leone-Fithen. I am the physical education teacher at Barnard and known as Coach MJ. I have been with the district since 1994. I spent several years as a 6th grade classroom teacher and health educator. This is my second year at Barnard and I am excited to be a part of such a dynamic program. I believe in the Chinese philosophy of taking care of the mind, body and spirit and plan to instill these values into the physical education program at Barnard. I will expose your child to many activities practiced in the Chinese culture such as tai chai, jiantzia (Chinese hackey sack), Chinese jump rope and much more. Students will learn to make healthy food and activity choices to support a healthy lifestyle. I live in the Ocean Beach community with my husband and two boys, Nicolas and Christopher. I am a soccer mom in the fall and baseball mom in the spring. I enjoy practicing Iyengar yoga, running and swimming near and in the Pacific Ocean. I had the opportunity to travel to China with my colleagues this summer. It was an incredible experience culturally, educationally and spiritually. I had the opportunity to take tai chai classes and receive therapeutic massages. I am looking forward to meeting you and sharing my experiences.
